Vanitas vs Gravitas

Logo Much has been made of the proposed new Harvard alum magazine, 02138. By statistics, it would be the third magazine for the venerable H College alumni. The university recently combined three newsletters into a glossy house organ, The Yard, which joins the existing Harvard Magazine, which gets a portion of its budget from the university but is editorially independent.

In an NYO profile, the brain behind 02138 said that it will be the “Vanity Fair for Harvard.” The money behind it is David Bradley (HBS, ‘77), dubbed “the thinking man’s media mogul“, who owns Atlantic Media. Editorial-wise, ironically someone -gosh - outside the Crimson community is in charge, but people at the helm are “not ready to unveil” their “media strategy.”

MySpace Playing Catch-up at Search

MarketWatch reports that News Corp plans to find “some strategic combination” of the high user traffic generated by its Internet sites (MySpace.com) and vast array of entertainment content to get the most revenue out of its Web-based properties.

News Corp.’s entertainment assets include the Twentieth-Century Fox film and television studios; cable networks such as FX, Fox Movie Channel and Fox News; the HarperCollins book-publishing unit; a controlling stake in satellite broadcaster DirecTV; newspapers such as the New York Post and the Times of London and more.
