Euro-bound: World Cup Scoop

When The Economist puts “Eurabia” on its cover this week, you know the world is watching Europe. Football, that is. So armchair traveller’s report this weekend is World Cup.

Although we’re struggling to sustain our interest in the tournament of the “beautiful game”, we have managed to watched a few matches. Here is a quick roundup -

Newspapers R.I.P.?

Newspaper At Slate’s 10th anniversary shindig, former Time Inc. editor-in-chief Norman Pearlstine pointed out that the principal strengths of newspapers traditionally have been their timeliness, their being publications of record, and their allowing for a transaction through classified ads, now the ‘net does all three better than a newspaper does. He concluded, “I think the most exciting thing that could happen is that newspapers and magazines become more publications of opinion.”

By common consent, as The Economist observed in a surveyof new media, the newspaper industry is in a perfect storm. Philip Meyer, predicted in his 2004 book, “The Vanishing Newspaper”, the last reader will recycle the last newspaper in April 2040.
